Umum telah mengetahui bahawa, setiap tahun negara kita pastinya akan berhadapan dengan masalah jerebu. Masalah jerebu ini bukanlah sesuatu perkara yang patut dipandang remeh kerana selain boleh menjejaskan kesihatan kita sebagai manusia ini, hidupan seperti flora dan fauna juga turut mengalami penderitaan yang sama.
Jerebu yang melanda ini adalah berpunca daripada kemunculan titik-titik panas yang dikesan di radar satelit ditambah lagi dengan pembakaran yang dicetuskan sendiri oleh manusia. Kesan daripada pembakaran ini, kebakaran yang kecil ini telah menjadi besar dan merebak sehinggakan susah untuk di kawal.
Berikutan dengan itu, pelbagai inisiatif dari pihak kerajaan untuk mengurangkan kesan jerebu ini giat dijalankan. Jerebu yang kita hadapi pada hari ini walau bagaimanapun tidaklah seteruk jika hendak dibandingkan dengan jerebu yang berlaku pada tahun 1997.
Pada tahun itu, negara kita pernah diisytiharkan darurat akibat daripada asap jerebu yang sangat tebal sehinggakan penglihatan sejauh 5 meter terbatas. Berikutan dengan keadaan yang dilihat kritikal ketika itu, pasukan Bomba Malaysia pernah dikerahkan ke Indonesia bagi memadamkan kebakaran hutan yang menjadi punca jerebu ketika itu. Untuk mengetahui dengan lebih lanjut, ikuti perkongsian yang telah dikongsi oleh Ahmad Wildan Ismail berkenaan dengan kejayaan pasukan Bomba dan Penyelamat Malaysia dalam menolong memadamkan kebakaran hutan yang berlaku di Indonesia ketika itu:
MALAYSIA PERNAH HANTAR PASUKAN BOMBA UNTUK PADAM API DI INDONESIA.
Minggu lepas aku sempat ziarah pakcik aku yang dah bersara penuh dari Bomba Malaysia. Disebabkan jerebu semakin teruk sekarang ni, dia bercerita tentang pengalaman dia menjadi salah seorang yang berkhidmat dalam misi antarabangsa iaitu memadam kebakaran hutan di Indonesia.
Dia bermula dengan bercerita keadaan semasa itu. Bulan September 1997, berjuta rakyat Malaysia dipaksa memakai topeng muka untuk mengelak dari menyedut asap jerebu. Setiap hari ada sahaja orang yang dikejarkan ke hospital kerana sesak nafas sehingga kebanyakan hospital penuh! Di Sarawak paling teruk, IPU (Indeks Pencemaran Udara) naik mendadak sehingga 900! Kuching dan beberapa bandar utama (Sibu, Sarikei, Miri) diisytihar darurat terus. Penglihatan kurang 5 meter! Bukan sekolah je tutup, pejabat tutup, kedai tutup dan kawasan perindustiran semua pun tutup.
Masa tu PM ke-4, Tun Mahathir (kini PM ke-7) bersama kerajaan memikirkan pelbagai cara untuk mengurangkan jerebu termasuk pembenihan awan. Kawasan-kawasan yang mempunyai bangunan tinggi pula di pancut dengan air pili bomba dari atas untuk kurangkan asap jerebu. Tapi tak berkurangan pun asap jerebu ni. Setiap pagi, orang masa tu buka berita untuk mengetahui perkembangan terkini terutama tentang IPU. Adakah makin naik? Atau makin turun?
3 hari selepas itu, baru kita semua ketahui yang punca sebenar jerebu teruk adalah dari pembakaran hutan di Sumatera dan Kalimantan. Lebih 10 juta hektar hutan dibakar untuk tujuan pertanian. Pada 16 September 1997, mungkin kerana malu dan diasak teruk diperingkat antarabangsa, Presiden Suharto membuat sidang media dan permohonan maaf secara terbuka kepada semua rakyat Indonesia dan negara jiran yang terbabit.
Di dalam keadaan darurat, kerajaan Indonesia sudah tiada daya untuk memadamkan api kebakaran hutan mereka. Tiada seorang pun anggota bomba Indonesia yang tertinggal dalam usaha memadamkan api. Kalian bayangkan, yang kita lihat jerebu itu sebagai asap putih. Tetapi di Indonesia yang mereka lihat adalah asap tebal berwarna kuning (pakcik aku cakap oren pekat..)
Keesokan harinya (pendekkan cerita), atas arahan Tun Mahathir dan persetujuan kabinet, Bomba Malaysia mengarahkan sebanyak 1200 orang anggota dan peralatan (hose, pam, medic dan lain-lain) dikumpul dalam masa 48 jam. Kita bantu Indonesia padam api! Itu yang yang pakcik aku cerita. Semua anggota bersemangat nak pulihkan udara di Malaysia. Semasa taklimat awal, mereka bagitahu yang mereka harus membantu memadamkan api di Sumatera. Tapi tak tahu misi berjalan berapa hari, berapa lama. Peralatan cukup tak? Tak pasti. Anggota cukup tak? Tak tahu. Keadaan hutan macam mana? Entah! Semuanya berserah pada Allah sahaja.
Tepat jam 5 pagi pada 23 September 1997, 1200 anggota dengan kelengkapan yang ada telah berhimpun di Port Klang dan mereka belayar ke Indonesia menaiki 3 buah kapal milik TLDM. 2 kapal ke Sumatera, 1 kapal lagi ke Kalimantan. Pakcik aku cerita lagi, keadaan dalam kapal pack macam sardin! Beberapa jam pelayaran, pakcik aku tiba di Port Dumai. Dia cakap, bukan sahaja asap, malahan serpihan abu yang terbakar pun nampak berterbangan. Bau hangit dan hangus terbakar pun sangat kuat.
Semua anggota dipecahkan mengikut pasukan kecil. Pakcik aku tak ingat berapa pasukan, tapi dia diarahkan ke kawasan hutan di Jambi. Ada yang naik bas, ada yang naik van. Semuanya berpecah menuju tempat yang diarahkan. Pakcik aku kata perjalanan ambil masa 5 jam. Dia naik van je dan van tu pun angkut naik kapal TLDM dari Malaysia juga!
Sampai di Jambi, anggota semua pening sebab air takde! Sumber paling dekat ialah lebih kurang 300 meter dari kawasan pembakaran. Terpaksalah mereka ni usung hos yang disambung-sambung sampai ke punca air. Paling perit masa nak angkat pam air. Pam tu berat, nak angkat kena 4 orang. Dah la berat, bila letak atas tanah, pam jadi tenggelam sebab kawasan tu agak becak dan berlumpur. Anggota semua kena tebang pokok untuk meredah hutan. Di beberapa tempat mereka terpaksa bina jambatan untuk menyeberang tanah lumpur yang dalam.
Pakcik aku cakap, operasi sangat sukar sebab hampir 5 hari mereka memadam api selama 10 jam sehari tapi asap jerebu masih belum berkurang. Arahan dari pusat mengatakan tanah gambut yang mereka pijak tu punca sebenar. Api dah berjaya dipadam di permukaan tanah, tetapi bahagian dalam tanah gambut tu apinya masih kuat merebak. Tanah gambut mempunyai banyak fiber campuran akar mendap yang mudah terbakar. Superior pakcik aku bagi arahan yang mereka harus mengorek lubang ke dalam tanah gambut dan halakan kepala hos ke lubang yang dah dikorek tu.
Operasi berjalan selama 14 hari dan mereka membuat perkara yang sama setiap hari! Anggota semua dah penat dan ada yang mengalami extreme dehydration. Bekalan makanan pun dah berkurang. Mereka makan pun apa yang ada sahaja. Nak mandi? Jangan harap la. Rehat pun sekadar tidur-tidur ayam. Mental mereka masih kuat, tapi keadaan fizikal dah betul-betul lunyai. Mereka tetap meneruskan usaha sehingga ketua misi membuat pengumuman yang asap sudah pun berkurang. Pakcik aku dan geng-geng dia menjerit happy sebab tak sabar nak habiskan misi dan pulang ke Malaysia.
Hari ke 17 mereka di Indonesia, semua anggota bomba tersenyum gembira. Hujan mula menitis di bumi Sumetera seawal pagi jam 9. Menjelang petang, hujan lebat berlarutan sehingga 2 hari. Jika diikutkan ramalan, memang jangkaan untuk monsun barat daya tiba. Selama 2 minggu langit dipenuhi kepulan asap, kini sudah pun cerah kembali. Di hari ke-20, mereka dibawa pulang ke Malaysia. Masa tu aku masih di tingkatan 2 di sekolah asrama. Keluarga aku telefon yang pakcik aku dah pun selamat pulang ke Malaysia. Syukur Alhamdulillah.
Semenjak itu, di setiap tahun pada pertengahan bulan September, jerebu adalah sesuatu yang pasti kita “HADAP”. Kita pun tak pasti bila akan berakhir jerebu macam ni. Tahun 2013 pun teruk juga. Tapi tak seteruk kejadian 1997 (22 tahun lepas).
Kongsi cerita aku ni supaya sama-sama kita dapat doakan agar keadaan jerebu sekarang dapat kembali pulih dalam masa terdekat.
